Written on the internet

Our weekly roundup of links we hope you’ll find interesting and useful.

  • Aspiring authors, take note: agent Jessica Faust makes her point clearly and concisely in this post about what kinds of books agents want. (Your editors feel a blog post about “perceptions of art versus business” coming on…)
  • And here’s advice from author Hannah Moskowitz on what to do when an agent wants to represent you.
  • Wait! Don’t send that manuscript until you check it for the 4 Danger Signs
  • … and remember that if it doesn’t sell, that doesn’t make it a failure. Wise words from writer John Smolens.
  • We leave you with a great list of great books on writing.

Enjoy your weekend. Writing something wonderful!

Oh gods. I thought I was writing with few adverbs. I just read over what I have of Lucy. I was very, very wrong. Thanks for the reminder.

    Jo –

When you’re writing sometime, keep an eye out for adverbs and try to find a better verb to substitute. For example, instead of, “He walked quickly across the parking lot,” use “He strode” or “He hurried,” etc. Of course, sometimes an adverb IS the right word (or conveys just the right shade of meaning), so don’t beat yourself up about leaving one here or there.
